Emerging Surfaces

I love surfaces that show the passing of time – like a worn down area on a well loved piece of clothing or a frequently touched piece of metal or stone that’s been burnished by human contact. I never get tired of discovering what will show up over time if I pay attention to the history of my previous layers, marks, color and touch. Each action inspires a reaction, and I respond to what emerges until I intuitively know when to stop. It’s fun to get lost in the process and then be surprised by it in the end. Sometimes I even forget how I got there. All of my work, whether it’s wearable or wall hung art, evolves through the same process of me working and waiting for the surface to emerge.
